MPC is the third-largest crude oil refiner in the U.S. and the biggest in the Midwest. We own a seven-plant refinery community situated within the Midwest and Gulf Coast areas of the U.S., with approximately 1,817,000 bpcd of crude oil throughput capability. The geographic areas of our refineries present us with strategic advantages. Our refineries are integrated with each other by way of pipelines, terminals and barges to maximize operating effectivity.

Our refineries have the flexibility to acquire crude oil from a variety of supply sources, which offers us with flexibility to optimize crude provide costs. MPC processes a diverse slate of crude oil. The typical slate in 2016 consisted of about 60 p.c bitter crude oil and 40 % sweet crude oil.
