Discovering alternate options to conventionally derived aviation gasoline was the impetus behind a brand new ASTM International commonplace, ASTM D7566, Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuels Containing Synthesized Hydrocarbons. The brand new customary was developed by Subcommittee D02.J0.06 on Emerging Turbine Fuels, part of ASTM Worldwide Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants.
he issuance of ASTM D7566 is the culmination of a targeted, collaborative effort by the business aviation trade to move toward extra environmentally friendly fuels, and to diversify the suppliers of aviation fuel, says Mark Rumizen, aviation fuels specialist, Federal Aviation Administration, and chair of the task group that developed ASTM D7566.
Rumizen says that considerations with the future cost and supply of conventionally derived aviation gas and the imposition of carbon emissions limitations contributed to the development of ASTM D7566.
In line with Rumizen, the Industrial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) was established in 2006 to facilitate the introduction of different aviation fuels.
he U.S. Air Power, CAAFI and ASTM Subcommittee J (Part J.06) coordinated the evaluation and qualification of candidate different fuels, says Rumizen. n support of this effort, Part 6 of Subcommittee J established the synthetic fuels process group to put in writing ASTM D7566 to accommodate blends of typical aviation turbine gasoline with synthesized hydrocarbon mix parts./p>
In addition to offering requirements for these blends, ASTM D7566 defines specific varieties of aviation turbine fuel which will comprise synthesized hydrocarbons for civil use in the operation and certification of aircraft; it describes fuels discovered satisfactory for the operation of aircraft and engines.
This initial model of ASTM D7566 provides standards for the manufacturing, distribution and use of aviation turbine engine fuel produced from coal, natural fuel or biomass utilizing the Fischer-Tropsch process. However, the standard is structured to accommodate different future forms of synthetic fuels produced from non-standard feedstocks and processes as they are developed. These new gas sorts may be added to ASTM D7566 in annexes after they’re certified.
Potential users of ASTM D7566 embody all entities involved in the manufacturing, transportation, storage, trade and use of aviation turbine engine fuel, including refineries, pipelines, airport fuel farms and airlines.
All involved parties are invited to participate in the ongoing growth of ASTM D7566.
t is very important to have participation from manufacturers of the aircraft and turbine engines, as these require gas controlled to very high requirements, says Rumizen. n addition, representatives from companies comprising the aviation gasoline infrastructure and biofuel producers would offer experience and expertise that could be very helpful for improvement of future annexes of ASTM D7566./p>
